BIRMINGHAM — The Birmingham Police Department announced on Wednesday that the West Precinct has been temporally shut down following an officer testing positive for COVID-19.
The officer was off duty but was at the office for approximately three hours before a family member called to say that they had tested positive for the virus. The employee was then tested and that test came back positive.
The Birmingham Police Department already had emergency protocols in place to prepare for a COVID-19 response. As a result, emergency protocols were immediately implemented. The West Precinct was shut down for disinfection. The building will be reopen once Birmingham Fire & Rescue Service gives the all clear.
The infected officer worked alone in their vehicle and that vehicle has been disinfected.
No other employees tested positive.
