MONTGOMERY — The Alabama Department of Labor released the official count for initial claims filed during the week of May 17 – May 23, 2020, and the data shows that the number of claims has remained consistently low throughout May following a surge in April.
The department announced that 27,920 initial claims were filed either online or by telephone during this period. Of those 27, 920 claims filed, 16,926 are COVID-19 related. This follows weekly averages of around 26,000 throughout May, which is considerably less than the numbers in April. April numbers reached historic highs of 106,739 on April 4 and remained above 60,000 for the remainder of the month.

Industries with the most number of claims are: Industry Not Available (8,459), followed by Administrative and Support Services (2,718), Transportation Equipment Manufacturing (2,631), Food Service and Drinking Places (2,125), Education Services (888) and General Merchandise Stores (700).
Jefferson County recorded largest number of claims with 4,221.
