BIRMINGHAM — The discovery of human remains in an east Birmingham landfill has kicked off an investigation by local authorities.
The remains, which AL.com has reported to be a human skull and several bones, were discovered around 11 a.m. on Thursday by workers at the Eastern Area Sanitary Landfill, which is located off of Alton Road.
The skull was found by workers who were clearing out an area in the landfill, Birmingham police spokesman Sgt. Rod Mauldin told AL.com.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office and Birmingham Police Detectives responded to the scene. There has been no indication of how long the remains have been there or the cause of death.
