From The Tribune staff reports
BIRMINGHAM — The Birmingham Police Department has released its own internal data showing the number of criminal offenses that has occurred from the start of the year up until May 26, 2020.
According to the BPD, their data shows a nearly blanket decrease in crime compared to this time in 2019. In fact, all but homicides appear to have seen a sizable decrease throughout Birmingham. The BPD has reported that there have been 41 murders so far this year compared to 38 at this time in 2019. West Birmingham has seen the most murders with 15, while east Birmingham recorded 11 murders, south Birmingham recorded nine murders and north Birmingham recorded six murders.
“As you can see, we have made progress in our crime fighting efforts,” Birmingham police spokesman Sgt. Rod Mauldin said. “We realize that numbers do not overshadow the fact that someone has been victimized by a crime and how crime affects the community. Therefore, we will continue to work with the community to solve and decrease crime within the city of Birmingham.”
Overall, the police department reports a 27% decrease in crime this year compared to 2019. Rape has dropped considerably with 28 reported cases. There were 80 reported rape cases in 2019.
