TRUSSVILLE — One person was arrested in Trussville early Monday morning after a break-in at Academy Sports + Outdoors on Gadsden Highway.
The glass doors of the store were broken into and a large group of individuals entered the building, Trussville police detective Ben Short said. It’s unknown if anything was stolen, but one person has been arrested for burglary. Their identity has not been revealed.
According to authorities, around 20 vehicles entered the parking lot around 4 a.m. on Monday, June 1, 2020, and attempted to break through the glass doors with bats. The glass did not break, so they instead shot the glass, causing it to shatter. Around eight people entered the store and went to the gun counter. They were unable to take anything, however.
Short said that the break-in appears to be connected to the widespread vandalism and looting that impacted Birmingham and the surrounding areas late Sunday night during protests of police brutality and racial inequality.
