TRUSSVILLE — The Hewitt-Trussville High School band program officially found itself a new leader on Thursday with the approval of Michael Guzman as it new band director.
The Trussville City Schools board approved the hiring of Guzman during its meeting on Thursday, June 11, 2020.
Guzman arrives at Trussville following a three-year stint as Director of Bands at Tuscaloosa County High School.
“I am excited to join the great team of educators of the Hewitt-Trussville High School Band program and contribute to the great success of this storied program,” Guzman said in a statement. “It’s great to be a Husky.”
Guzman also serves as co-founder and artistic director of the Black Warrior Winds, which is an adult community band serving the West Alabama area. In addition, he owns a studio in Tuscaloosa County where he works with low brass players from grades 6-12.
Throughout his career, his bands have been consistently rated superior.
Guzman holds degrees from the University of Miami and Florida International University, in Music Education and in Wind Conducting. Previously, he has served as Associate Director of Bands at Miami Coral Reef High School and Director of Bands at Southwest Miami Senior High School.
Outside of teaching, Guzman has served as a freelance musician, playing with such groups as the Miami Symphony Orchestra, Symphony of the Americas, Walenstine Symphony, Alhambra Orchestra, Miami’s Top Brass and others.
“Mr. Guzman’s various band experiences in South Florida and Alabama will be fantastic additions to HTHS fine arts,” Hewitt-Trussville High School Principal Tim Salem said.
