LEEDS — The city of Leeds approved the purchase of new body cameras for the police department.
Police Chief Jim Atkinson said the cameras will hold the department and the community accountable.
“They’re not only for officer safety because they record if there’s any dispute,” said Atkinson. “But it’s also for citizens.”
The new body cameras, made by Digital Ally, have a feature that automatically starts recording as soon as an officer exits their vehicle.
“We will make sure that every officer has one,” Atkinson added. “If something comes into question about anyone doing anything wrong, it is recorded so we’ll know. We are going to monitor them.”
The city council approved the purchase of 11 cameras and the equipment to go along with them. The total cost will be around $5 thousand.
