From The Tribune staff reports
JEFFERSON COUNTY — Cybercriminals are out in full force amid this coronavirus pandemic, and the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office has posted a list of “Things You Should Know” on its website.
The post points to two COVID-19 scams citizens should be aware of:
- Seeking donations fraudulently for illegitimate or non-existent charitable organizations.
- Medical providers obtaining patient information for COVID-19 testing and then using that information to fraudulently bill for other tests and procedures.
Anyone who suspects they have become a victim of a COVID-19 scam can report the matter to the Department of Justice’s National Center for Disaster Fraud hotline at 866-720-5721 or submit a report at justice.gov/disastercomplaintform.
