BIRMINGHAM — The Birmingham Police Department is investigating the shooting death of a store owner in Ensley.
On Tuesday, July 7, 2020, Amin Poonawalla, 62, of Hoover, was found shot at the Ensley Food Mart. Officers were dispatched to the area after multiple rounds of gunfire were detected by Shot Spotter in the 2500 block of Avenue E.
Poonawalla was found in the parking lot and was unresponsive when officers arrived on the scene. He was pronounced dead by Birmingham Fire and Rescue and the Jefferson County Coroner.
Detectives believe Poonawalla was locking the store when a shooter approached him and took his life.
No suspects are in custody.
