TUSCALOOSA — The Tuscaloosa Police Department is investigating a shooting that occurred outside the University Mall in Tuscaloosa, on Saturday, July 11, 2020. Two people were injured in the shooting, according to police.
Officers were called to the scene on the eastern side of the mall at 5:14 p.m. When the officers arrived, they found one victim at the scene and the second victim had been taken to DCH in a private vehicle.
It’s a soul-crushing day for Tuscaloosa,” said Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox. “There’s no doubt, but it’s soul-crushing anytime anyone is involved in a shooting.”
Maddox said one of the shooting victims was an innocent bystander.
“I would imagine that the people were involved in this, somebody knew that there was a firearm involved in this matter,” said Maddox. “There is a proliferation of guns on our streets as great as any time I’ve seen in my service to the city.”
The mall was locked down after the incident.
Police said the scene is now secure and it is safe for shoppers to leave the stores.
