HOOVER — The family of 8-year-old Royta Giles Jr. has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the Riverchase Galleria.
The family’s attorney states that the mall had a duty to provide adequate security for shoppers and guests.
“The family of hopes that no one else has to experience the pain they are suffering right now,” said attorney Courtney French.
According to police reports, Giles was struck by a stray bullet while visiting the mall on July 3, 2020, and later died from his injuries.
The lawsuit lists the defendants as Brookfield Properties Retail, Inc. (owner and operator of the Riverchase Galleria mall), General manager Mike White, and Andy Frain Services, Inc. (Security Company).
“The Defendants were negligent and wanton in failing to provide adequate security at the Riverchase Galleria, resulting in the wrongful death of 8-year-old Royta D. Giles, Jr.,” reads the lawsuit.
