TRUSSVILLE — Registration for after-school care for Trussville City Schools is underway. The program for the school system is now provided by the YMCA.
The YMCA Afterschool Academy will operate for students K-5, from the final bell until 6 p.m., at Cahaba Elementary, Magnolia Elementary and Paine Elementary schools. A snack will be provided each day. The program runs from Aug. 12, 2020, to May 27, 2021.
There are two payment options: monthly or weekly. For the monthly plan, the cost is $180 per month, per child and $160 for each additional child. The rate is based on a weekly rate of $50 per week for 36 weeks of school, therefore months with holidays will not be prorated. Payments are automatically drafted and are due by the first of each month. For the weekly option, the rate will be $50 per child and $44 for each additional charge. Weeks with holidays will not be prorated and payments are due each Friday by a weekly bank draft.
There is financial assistance available. A downloadable application is available here.
The program will not be available on emergency early release days or on school holidays.
The YMCA is taking safety precautions to prevent the spread of coronavirus, according to YMCA Youth Development Director Rhonda Elmore. Students and staff will have wellness screenings, including a temperature check, each day. All students will be in small groups of no more than 12. Elmore said face coverings will be required unless a child is outdoors and is able to maintain a distance of 6 feet or more from others.
“We have all of the cleaning protocols in place,” said Elmore. “We’re not sharing supplies but we have protocols in place if we have to share those supplies would be cleaned before the next group uses them.”
The YMCA will also have student pickup by carpool only in order to decrease the number of people coming into a building.
If there is a positive case or possible exposure, Elmore said the Y will follow directions from the Jefferson County Health Department.
During the summer program, the YMCA had a staff member test positive for COVID-19. The group the staff member was working with was quarantined, according to Elmore.
There is a $25 registration fee plus a $50 deposit due at time of registration. The $50 deposit will be applied to the first month’s payment. Registration fees are non-refundable. Deposits are refundable if enrollment is canceled at least two weeks in advance. To register, click on your child’s school:
