BIRMINGHAM — One person is dead and an off-duty Birmingham police officer was among five people who were wounded in a Saturday night shooting in Birmingham, according to Sgt. Rodarius Mauldin. The Alabama Bureau of Investigation has taken over the investigation due to the officer’s involvement.
The identification of the victim has been withheld pending notification of next of kin.
“At approximately 11:49 a.m., officers from west precinct responded to the #1 Stunnas Motorsports Club located at 426 18th Street in Ensley on reports of a person shot,” Mauldin said. “Officers arrived to discover multiple individuals wounded by gunfire.”
According to Mauldin, six people sustained gunshot wounds during the incident and were transported to UAB Hospital.
“BPD was later notified that one of the victims succumb to his injuries and was pronounced deceased by hospital staff,” Mauldin said. “Of those wounded was a off-duty Birmingham police officer who was patronizing the establishment. The off-duty officer sustained non-life threatening injuries.”
The other four victims also suffered non-life threatening injuries. The preliminary investigation suggest an altercation occurred prior to shots being fired, according to Mauldin. The nature of the altercation is unknown.
“There are no suspects in custody,” Mauldin said. “Alabama Bureau of Investigations will be the lead investigative agency in this incident.”
