CLAY — A long-awaited project to clear Cosby Lake is underway. M & N of Alabama, LLC is performing dredging after a bid was awarded to the company in June.
The walking trail around the lake is still open, but a parking lot and the lake are closed.
The lake will be dredged from the shallow end in order to remove the sediment that has been deposited over the last 100 years. The project will take around 90 days to complete.
The city will pay an estimated $486,920 for the work.
The dredging comes after all other attempts to clear the lake were exhausted. While waiting for the Army Corps of Engineers to approve a permit for dredging, the city tried adding fish to eat the moss and algae. There have also been special chemicals added to the water and two water fountains to aerate the water.
