VESTAVIA HILLS — Vestavia Hills High School has suspended football practice for the next 10 days and has canceled the first two games of the 2020 season after multiple coaches and players either tested positive for COVID-19 or were in close proximity to someone who had.
The team will not be allowed to practice until Aug. 21, which was originally scheduled to be the first Friday night of the season. The Rebels’ opener at Mountain Brook and Week 1 home opener against Homewood have been canceled.
The school will attempt to add a game during Week 5, which was originally meant to be Vestavia’s bye week. The Rebels are scheduled to host Hewitt-Trussville on Oct. 9.
According to reports, longtime head coach Buddy Anderson and his wife have tested positive for COVID-19. Anderson — the AHSAA’s all-time winningest coach — is set to retire at the end of the 2020 season.
