HUEYTOWN — After 24 hours of back and forth discussions, the high school football game between Clay-Chalkville and Hueytown is officially being canceled.
According to a press release from JefCoEd, the Golden Gophers have notified the Alabama High School Athletic Association (AHSAA) they are canceling their next two games due to COVID-19 concerns and out of an abundance of caution.
Hueytown was scheduled to host Clay-Chalkville this Friday, Aug. 28. The Golden Gophers were then scheduled to visit Bessemer City on Sept. 4. Both games have been canceled, according to JefCoEd.
Sources confirmed approximately 36 Hueytown players were unable to compete this week.
Hewitt-Trussville has also experienced a postponement this week, as Saraland called off an Aug. 28 visit to Hewitt-Trussville Stadium. The schedule openings have sparked conversation between Clay-Chalkville and Hewitt-Trussville.
The two will not renew their rivalry in 2020, as the short timeframe was not feasible for either side.
