JASPER — Clay-Chalkville opened up Class 6A, Region 6 play with a 40-7 road win over Jasper on Friday night.
With the win, No. 7 Clay-Chalkville improves to 3-0 on the year, including a 1-0 mark in league play. The Cougars started the season with a 37-19 victory at Shades Valley and followed with a forfeit over Hueytown on Aug. 28.
It was the defense that got things started on Friday night, as Clay-Chalkville’s Jayden Sweeney stepped in front of a Kevon Samuel pass and took it 45 yards for a pick-6 early in the second quarter.
According to the Daily Mountain Eagle, Clay-Chalkville would add two more touchdowns to take a 19-0 advantage into the break.
The Cougars answered Jasper’s only score of the night with a 61-yard touchdown run from Edward Osley to swell the lead to 26-7 in the third. Clay-Chalkville would complete the road win with suffocating defense, a late-third quarter touchdown and another in the fourth.
In total, the Cougars held Jasper (1-2, 0-1) to less than 200 yards of offense, 53 of which came on a third-quarter TD run by Samuel. That would serve as the Vikings’ only score of the night.
Clay-Chalkville will celebrate its home opener next Friday when region foe Gardendale comes to town.
