BIRMINGHAM — A 71-year-old woman has been killed following a Sunday-night shooting in Birmingham.
Birmingham police responded at 9:05 p.m. Sunday to 546 Brussels Circle on a report of a person shot. Upon arrival in the Harris Homes community, officers discovered Javanna Cottons Owens, 71, unresponsive in the roadway.
She was taken to UAB Hospital where she was pronounced dead at 9:40 p.m.
According to al.com, Owens’ death came less than two months after her grandson’s killing. Her grandson, 27-year-old Marquette Carter, was shot and killed during an Aug. 1 dice game in Birmingham.
Birmingham police Sgt. Rod Mauldin said an arrest has been made in connection to Sunday’s homicide, but the suspect’s name is being withheld pending formal charges.
