HAYDEN — Relentless defense guided Leeds to a key Class 5A, Region 6 victory on Friday night at Robert W. Reid Stadium in Hayden.
A 37-yard field goal from Jacob Dowd in the second quarter was all the Green Wave would allow on their way to a 19-3 victory over the Wildcats (2-2, 1-1). Leeds now rides a four-game winning streak into the midway point of the season, sharing the top of the region standings with Alexandria (5-0, 3-0).
Head coach Jerry Hood’s team will slip out of league play next week for a home game with West Morgan.
This week, it was running back Rametrius Yelverton that provided the spark, running in a 47-yard touchdown in the first quarter. CJ Douglas finished off the first half with a 78-yard punt return for a touchdown.
Quarterback Jarod Latta set the final tally with a 21-yard touchdown pass to Joshua Ruff in the final frame.
Leeds has now doubled its win total from last year and sits firmly in the Class 5A playoff picture with five regular season games remaining. The Region 6 standings as of Sept. 19:
- Alexandria (5-0, 3-0)
- Leeds (4-1, 3-0)
- Center Point (3-2, 2-1)
- Hayden (2-2, 1-1)
- Corner (1-3, 1-2)
- St. Clair County (1-3, 1-2)
- Moody (0-3, 0-2)
- Lincoln (0-5, 0-3)
