TRUSSVILLE — The Hewitt-Trussville volleyball team honored its lone Senior, Blakely Valdez, last week in a 3-0 Class 7A, Area 6 win over Gadsden city–the program’s first conference victory since 2017, according to Hewitt-Trussville athletics.
Valdez and her Huskies completed the three-game sweep, 25-9, 25-8, 25-9 in Bryant Bank Arena.
According to the school’s weekly newsletter, Molly Kate Green led the charge with seven aces, seven digs, and 28 assists. Zoe Waldrop had nine digs, four aces, and four kills to go with eight kills from Gabi Dion, and four kills and three aces from Chrischandria James.
Lacie Shelnutt pitched in with seven digs and three aces to go with eight digs from Haley Wilkinson.
Unfortunately, that momentum did not carry over to the weekend, as Hewitt-Trussville dropped two matches on Saturday at its 2020 Husky Challenge tournament. The girls lost 2-0 to Mortimer Jordan and 2-0 to Chelsea, completing their bracket run on Saturday.
Thompson posted a 6-1 record to capture the Husky Challenge championship. The Warriors, ranked fourth in Class 7A, notched bracket wins over Chelsea, Oxford, Southside-Gadsden, Jasper and Homewood for the title. Thompson’s one tournament loss came to Gardendale in pool play.
