GINSVILLE, Fla. — The Southeastern Conference announced on Wednesday that one of this weekend’s football games has been postponed.
Due to positive coronavirus cases within the University of Florida program, the Gators’ Oct. 17 home game with LSU has been pushed back to Dec. 12. No. 9 Florida has experienced a surge in positive COVID-19 tests this week following a 41-38 loss to No. 11 Texas A&M last Saturday.
According to college football reporter Brett McMurphy, Florida has 18 current scholarship players, three walk-ons and two assistant coaches who have tested positive, leaving it with less than 50 scholarship players available for Saturday’s now postponed home game.
“Our priority is the health and well-being of our student-athletes and staff,” LSU athletic director Scott Woodward said in a statement. “The decision to reschedule the game comes as a result of close coordination and cooperation with the University of Florida and SEC officials, and we are in full support. It is disappointing for everyone, but prudent. We wish all those at Florida who may be impacted the very best.”
