CLAY — The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after a 15-year-old girl was shot in Clay early on Sunday, Nov. 1, 2020.
The teen returned to her house in the 5900 block of Debbie Drive, shortly after 2 a.m. after being at a friend’s house, according to Sgt. Joni Money. The parents were not expecting the girl to return home that night.
“Her parents heard the garage door open and thought someone was breaking into the home,” said Money. “The step-father retrieved his firearm and went to investigate.”
Investigators said the teen was accidentally shot in the abdomen and taken to Children’s of Alabama with serious injuries.
