Margie Lee Vaughan Smith, 98, of Pell City, Alabama, went to be with our Lord on Nov. 4, 2020.
She had been cared for by her daughter, Pat, in Milton, Florida, for the last few months. Margie was born to Oral and Exer Vaughan on Oct. 22, 1922.
She graduated from Hanceville High School in 1940 and went on to study education at Troy State University. Afterwards, she taught school for a time.
She married Lester Smith and they resided in Birmingham with their two daughters for many years. She started a custom drapery business which she owned and operated until her retirement in the early 1980s. She and Lester retired together to Pell City where she has resided since.
Margie was a member of Eden Westside Baptist Church in Pell City for over thirty years, where she taught Sunday School and also served as Training Union Director.
She loved to read, do crossword puzzles, crochet, and play the organ.
Mrs. Smith was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Lester Smith; her daughter, Paula Dian Hoagland and son-in-law, Gordon Allen Hoagland; her parents, Oral and Exer Vaughan; her brothers James Vaughan and Wayne Vaughan; and a sister, Muriel Vaughan Allred.
She is survived by a daughter, Patricia Ann Smith McCoy and son-in-law, Herman Roy McCoy; her grandchildren, Terri Shannon McCoy, Timothy Michael McCoy, and Amy Renee Hoagland. She is also survived by six great-grandchildren, Andrew Allen Hannah, Kressie Olivia Kornis, Alexander David Hannah, Paul Joseph Kornis, Ashley Dian Hannah, and Gavin Reese Peaden; and a niece Tracy Gaylene Tatum.
Margie Smith was a beautiful and strong Christian lady who lived a very long and full life. She was deeply loved by family and many friends and will be greatly missed.
The funeral service for Mrs. Smith was a graveside service on Monday, Nov. 9, at Jefferson Memorial Gardens in Trussville, Alabama. It was officiated by her pastor, Rev. Jackie Connell and her Sunday School teachers, Bill Ayers and Jeff Lesser.
