BIRMINGHAM — On Wednesday morning, the Birmingham Police Department released a public service announcement on its social media accounts regarding guns..
The PSA features Public Information Officer Sgt. Rodarius Mauldin, who informs the public that Birmingham police have taken more than 2,000 firearms off the streets this year. The firearms featured in the video were all seized during 2020.
Mauldin acknowledges the many ways that firearms can be obtained illegally and warns gun owners to secure their firearms. He explains how it could take less than 10 seconds for someone to open an unlocked car and retrieve a firearm stored inside. That firearm could then be used to commit a host of violent crimes.
