The first installment of the Alabama Sports Writers Association high school basketball rankings have been released.
The Hewitt-Trussville girls, Pinson Valley boys and Center Point boys each debuted in their respective classifications.
Head coach Tonya Hunter has the Hewitt girls off to a 12-0 start, which is good enough for No. 2 in Class 7A, one spot below top-ranked Hoover (7-0). The Huskies have won each of their games by double figures, including eight wins by 20 or more points and five wins by 30 or more points. Their widest margin came at home on Nov. 20 when the girls ran off with a 72-14 victory over Wenonah.
Hewitt-Trussville will look to remain unbeaten on Dec. 22 at Deshler.
The Pinson Valley boys have opened up at No. 3 in Class 6A thanks to a 5-1 start that includes a 65-64 overtime win over McGill-Toolen on Dec. 12 at the Big Red Showcase in Huntsville. Senior Joseph James led the Indians last Saturday with 24 points, followed by Joshua Williams with 20 of his own.
Head coach Darrell Barber and the boys are back in action tonight at home against Gadsden City.
The third-ranked Center Point boys improved to 3-1 on Tuesday night at Corner, 57-34. Senior Jordan Chatman led all scorers with 22 points in the Class 5A, Area 12 win.
The Eagles currently sit behind No. 1 Ramsay and No. 2 Parker in the first 5A poll, and hope to gain some ground tonight at home against Helena.
