MOBILE, Ala. (AP) — An Alabama police officer has been fired after being arrested on a murder charge in what authorities describe as an off-duty shooting.
The Prichard Police Department said officer Johnathan Murphy, 35, was terminated following the slaying in nearby Mobile. The department is investigating, said a statement.
Murphy was arrested Tuesday, Dec. 22, in the killing of Larry Taylor, 39, who was found dead from multiple gunshot wounds at an apartment building late Monday. Authorities didn’t release information about what might have prompted the gunfire.
Murphy, while on duty in Prichard, shot and killed a motorist in 2017 but wasn’t charged and remained on the force, news outlets reported.
Court records weren’t available Tuesday to show whether Murphy had a lawyer who could speak on his behalf.
