MESQUITE, TEXAS – The University of Utah football program is mourning the loss of freshman running back Ty Jordan.
The 19-year-old passed away while he was at home in Texas. Utah football took to social media to announce the death on Saturday morning, posting “Rest In Peace, #22. Forever in our hearts. We love you, Ty.”
Details surrounding his death are not clear. However, the Denton Police Department in Texas says officers responded to a shooting call on Friday night. Officers discovered a gunshot victim who had been shot one time. The unnamed victim was transported to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead.
Police say the 19-year-old accidentally shot himself.
Jordan was recently named the Pac-12 Offensive Freshman of the Year after running for 597 yards and six touchdowns in just five games played. The freshman ranked fourth in the conference in rushing yards this season.
