From The Tribune staff reports
BIRMINGHAM — The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is warning those who possess a Pistol Permit about a new scam.
The company that provides the software for online renewals first alerted online users about the scam. Permitium distributed an email stating, “The link is malicious and has NOT been generated by Permitium or your local agency Permit Director Software. NO TEXT MESSAGES FROM PERMITIUM CONTAIN LINKS.”
The sheriff’s office said scammers sent text messages to users stating their permit needs to be renewed or changed. A link contained in the email takes the user to a website to provide the permit holder’s personal information.
Permitium requests that if you feel as though you have been targeted by these scammers, please report the activity to https://www.usa.gov/stop-scams-frauds.
“As always, we would like to remind you that the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office will not contact you directly and ask for personal information or money,” Sgt. Joni Money said in a press release.
