BIRMINGHAM — Friday marks a day of celebration as 2020 comes to an end and 2021 begins after the clock strikes midnight.
The Birmingham Police Department is reminding the community to celebrate responsibly. The department recently released a PSA regarding celebratory gunfire.
In a brief video clip, officer Truman Fitzgerald addresses the topic by saying, “We understand people are looking forward to something to celebrate, but we want to keep these celebrations enjoyable for everyone and free of celebratory gunfire.”
Celebratory gunfire is against the law in the state of Alabama.
According to BPD Lt. LaQuaylin Parhm-Mack, bullets fired into the air can return at speeds exceeding 200 feet per second — fast enough to cause a fatality.
“Please join us in keeping our neighborhoods safe as we celebrate the new year,” said Parhm-Mack.
Birmingham police say extra officers will be patrolling the city during New Year’s Eve.
