JEFFERSON COUNTY — A Jefferson County Jail inmate was found dead in his cell Monday.
Authorities say the incident is under investigation. The identity of the inmate has not been released pending notification of his family, and the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office will determine the cause and manner of death.
According to a report from the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, the inmate did not exit his cell during the standard count on Monday, Jan. 4. Deputies went to check on the inmate and found him hanging in his cell.
Deputies attempted life-saving measures, but they were unsuccessful.
Investigators have found that the inmate had been seen about 20 minutes earlier by other inmates who say they did not observe anything unusual.
