TUSCALOOSA — A 22-year-old man is in jail in Tuscaloosa after witnesses told police that he hit his wife with a vehicle.
According to a statement from the Tuscaloosa Police Department, officers were called to the intersection on 15th Street and Interstate 359 north at 8:10 a.m. on Monday where a pregnant woman had been struck by a vehicle her husband was driving.
Police said witnesses reported seeing the woman exit the Kia and run before her husband made a U-turn and struck her.
Investigators with the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit interviewed multiple witnesses before charging Canaan Johnson, 22, with first-degree kidnapping and two counts of attempted murder.
He is being held at the Tuscaloosa County Jail with bond set at $180,000.
The woman was treated at DCH Regional Medical Center. Her condition and the condition of her baby are unknown at this time.
