The AHSAA state basketball playoffs should be in full swing, but winter weather has created some problems.
Class 1A-6A girls were supposed to take the floor for sub-regional play on Monday followed by boys action on Tuesday. However, freezing temperatures have caused dangerous driving conditions in many parts of the state, essentially pausing postseason play.
Only one local squad managed to play 32 minutes on Monday.
In Class 5A, the Center Point girls drew a tall sub-regional task. As the runner-up qualifier out of Area 12, the Eagles traveled to Area 9 champion and third-ranked Pleasant Grove in their playoff opener, losing by a count of 55-21.
That loss ends Center Point’s season while the Spartans advance into the regional semifinals against the winner of No. 5 Mae Jemison-West Point.
