BIRMINGHAM — The Birmingham Police Department responded to a shooting on Interstate 65 southbound just before 10 a.m., on Tuesday, March 2, 2021. The shooting happened near the Fourth Avenue exit.
Two people, a male and a female, were inside a vehicle when someone opened fire, striking the victims. The vehicle the two were traveling in then crashed into a concrete barrier. Sgt. Rodarius Mauldin, with the Birmingham Police Department, said the shooter or shooters have not been identified and no one is in custody. He said at this point, finding them is a top priority.
“It is a great concern because it’s a brazen act when you commit a crime such as that on the interstate, targeting someone,” Mauldin said. “So, there could’ve been multiple people hurt. “Thank God others was not hurt but it’s very important that we get this person off the street as soon as possible.”
Mauldin said investigators believe the vehicle was targeted. Investigators are hopeful that there are witnesses that can help in the investigation.
“The freeway was highly traveled so hopefully we can get somebody that witnessed it and they will come forward,” said Mauldin.
The victims were taken to the hospital with serious injuries.
Anyone with information is asked to call the Birmingham Police Department or Crime Stoppers of Metro Alabama.
