UPDATE: An unclassified death investigation connected to an apartment fire on Thursday has turned into a homicide investigation, according to the Birmingham Police Department.
Police say the preliminary investigation suggests that the victim sustained a gunshot wound. The Jefferson County Medical Examiner will perform an autopsy to determine a cause of death.
No suspects are in custody at this time.

BIRMINGHAM — The Birmingham Police Department is investigating an unclassified death investigation after a person was found dead after an apartment fire.
The fire happened on March 5, 2021, around 9:40 p.m. Birmingham Fire & Rescue personnel located the victim near a doorway in the apartment in the 100 block of Woodstation Place.
The Jefferson County Coroner/Medical Examiner’s Office will perform an autopsy on the victim.
