Governor Kay Ivey has issued a statement in the midst of a tragic day for many Alabamians.
According to multiple reports, five people are dead in Calhoun County after a tornado tore through the area on Thursday afternoon. According to the Calhoun County coroner, three family members were killed in the same house, a fourth person was killed in a mobile home and a fifth died near Wellington Road.
“Significant and dangerous weather continues to impact portions of Alabama, and I urge all folks in the path of these tornadoes and storm systems to remain on high alert,” said Ivey. “Tragically, we are receiving reports of loss of life. I offer my sincerest prayers to all impacted. Unfortunately, the day is not over yet. Y’all, please stay safe and vigilant!”
Minor injuries have been reported in Hoover and Shelby County, but no deaths have been reported in the Birmingham area.
More severe storms are expected in many parts of Alabama throughout the night.
