BESSEMER — The driver of a flatbed wrecker tow truck was killed Thursday in a collision with a CSX train in Bessemer.
Chief Deputy Coroner Bill Yates says the truck was traveling south in the 2300 block of Carolina Avenue when it was stopped on the railroad tracks and struck by a locomotive.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office has since identified the victim as Ronald Paul Whitely, 77, of Bessemer. He was pronounced dead at the scent shortly before 5 p.m. Thursday.
Whitely was the lone occupant of the truck. The circumstances surrounding the wreck is being investigated by the Bessemer Police Department.
