TRUSSVILLE — The Trussville City Schools Board of Education held a retreat and monthly board meeting on Monday, April 19, 2021.
The retreat was an all-day event for the board to discuss matters and hear from school administrators. It was streamed live on YouTube.
During the April meeting, the board recognized the Hewitt-Trussville Girls Head Basketball Coach Tonya Hunter. Hunter was named the 7A Coach of the Year by the Alabama Sports Writers Association. Her team leader, senior Amiya Payne, reeled in first-team honors — the guard’s fourth straight all-state nod as a varsity player. Freshman point guard Jordan Hunter also represents the Huskies as a third-teamer.
Superintendent Dr. Pattie Neill also recognized the entire school system for “not missing a beat during the pandemic.” The school system passed the Cognia Accreditation in October of 2020. Neill handed out certificates to principals from each school.
The following items were approved as part of the board’s consent agenda:

f. Approve the following field trips:
– HTHS Tennis to Montgomery April 21-23, 2021
– HTHS Band to Mobile Convention Center April 15-16, 2021
g. Approve Bid 21-03 for TCS Integrated Pest Management effective May 1, 2021 with option of 4 additional years
h. Approve the adoption of the entire list of state-adopted textbooks for mathematics and approve spending the 2021 textbook funds for textbooks and materials per the attached documents as recommended by the TCS Mathematics Textbook Committee
i. Approve the University of West Alabama Memorandum of Agreement for participation in the Instructional Leadership program.
j. Approve Tennis Court Bid
k. Approve Bid 21-04 for TCS Annual Summer Floor Strip and Waxing effective June 1, 2021 with an option of four additional years from the date contract was awarded.
I. Acknowledge contract between Husky Fast Network Contract (HFN) and the Trussville City Schools Athletic Foundation with no cost to the Board
m. Approve Facility Usage Agreements for:
– Youth Football Camp (and flyer) for stadium July 12-14, 2021
– 2021 Husky Youth Wrestling Camp (and flyer) for HTHS Wrestling Room May 31
– June 4, 2021
– Elite Passing Academy Camp (and flyer) for Stadium June 21-23, 2021\
– F3 Men’s Workout for Magnolia Elementary Parking Lot

In new business, the board held a first reading for the 2022-23 school calendar. Neill said the schedule mirrors the 2021-2022 calendar, but that the school system likes to plan ahead. The 2021-22 calendar was approved during the BOE’s March meeting. Students will have a staggered start for students K-12. The first day for students with last names beginning with A – M will be Wednesday, Aug. 11, and the first day for students with last names beginning with N – Z will be Thursday, Aug. 12. The first day for all students to come to school will be Friday, Aug. 13. The complete schedule can be viewed here.
The board also held the first reading for the registration contribution/fee sheets for schools and the first reading for the 2021-22 Code of Student Conduct.
The next TCS Board of Education meeting will be on Monday, May 17, 2021, at 5 p.m. in the Board Room of the Central Office.
