Hewitt-Trussville sweeps Hoover Classic
It was another impressive showing for the No. 1-ranked Hewitt-Trussville softball team over the weekend. The Huskies won all five of their games at the Hoover Classic, four of which came against ranked opponents.
Hewitt-Trussville (39-2-1, 4-1) opened the busy weekend with a 13-1 win over Eufala in four innings. Kenleigh Cahalan doubled twice, tripled and knocked in four runs en route to the dominant win.
Third baseman Jenna Lord barreled up a pair of homers on her way to a 3-for-3 outing in an 8-2 victory over Class 5A No. 5 Hayden.
Freshman righty Sara Phillips tossed a gem on Friday in a 3-2 win over Class 6A No. 3 Spanish Fort. Phillips struck out nine batters in a complete-game one-hitter for the Huskies.
The one-two punch of Cahalan and Anyce Harvey carried Hewitt to a 10-1 win over Class 2A Orange Beach on Saturday. Cahalan finished 2-for-3 with two home runs and five RBIs, while Harvey homered, singled and slapped in four runs for the Huskies.
Hewitt piled up seven extra-base hits in the tournament finale on Saturday to burn by Class 7A No. 2 Fairhope, 17-2, bumping the Huskies’ double-digit victory count to 14. Harvey, Cahalan, Madi Mitchell and Sarah Hindman each finished one home run apiece for HT. Lord swung in four more runs to go with three RBIs from Riley Tyree.
Scottsboro 7, Springville 4
Springville saw a 10-game winning streak come to an end on Friday, as the fourth-ranked Tigers fell by a count of 7-4 at Scottsboro. Springville finished the game with four unanswered runs, but a 7-0 deficit after three was too much to overcome.
The Tigers (27-9, 5-0) collected 10 team hits, including three from Mckenzie Brown and two apiece from Emmy Leopard and Bekah Hargrove. Tatum Bartlett doubled and matched Scottsboro’s Lexie Bennett with three RBIs.
