HOMEWOOD — The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office has identified a woman killed when a suspect running from police hit her vehicle Monday night in Homewood.
Coroner Bill Yates said the woman was a 42-year-old from Homewood, but he did not release her name, pending the notification of her family.
Police are still searching for the suspect who fled the scene after the crash.
According to multiple reports, the chase started when a Vestavia Hills police officer conducted a traffic stop on Interstate 65 northbound near Alford Avenue around 6:35 p.m. Monday. During the stop, the suspect fled the scene and proceeded north on the interstate, according to police.
The suspect later took the Lakeshore exit and crashed into oncoming traffic, killing the innocent woman. The Homewood Police Department is investigating the incident as a traffic homicide.
