CLAY – Crews working to widen Old Springville Road in Clay hit a gas line on Thursday, April 29, 2021, leaving both directions of the roadway closed while multiple crews responded.
The incident happened around 2 p.m. near the intersection of Civitan Road, where Bryant Park Elementary School is located, according to Jefferson County Commissioner Joe Knight. The location was in the city limits of Clay.
Center Point Fire & Rescue, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office and Trussville Gas and Water responded. The fire department stayed on the scene for roughly two hours while the gas company worked to stop the leak and repair the line.
The section of Old Springville Road was reopened just after 4 p.m.
The gas line was secured and the roadway reopened. Fire Chief Gene Coleman said no injuries were reported.
The speed limit surrounding the road construction has been reduced and drivers are urged to use caution.
