BIRMINGHAM — The Birmingham Police Department is conducting a homicide investigation after an incident that occurred on Sunday, May 2, 2021.
The victim has been identified as Eric Tyler Sledge Jr. ,27, of Hoover.
South Precinct officers were dispatched to the 1100 block of 20th Street South in Birmingham on report of a person shot at approximately 12:30 a.m. Sunday. According to BPD, officers arrived and observed the victim lying unresponsive in the middle of the roadway suffering from an apparent gunshot wound.
Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel transported Sledge to UAB Hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.
Police say the preliminary investigation suggests the victim was walking with a group of individuals who had just been involved in a physical altercation in the area when an unknown suspect fired shots at the victim, ultimately striking him.
