BRIGHTON — The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating after two people were shot late on Wednesday, May 5, 2021. A man was killed and a woman was injured.
Deputies were first called to the city of Brighton on reports of shots fired around 10:47 p.m. While in the area of Seventh Avenue, they heard additional shots being fired and went towards the location on Eight Avenue.
They found a man on Eighth Avenue suffering from gunshot wounds. He was lying near his vehicle, according to Sgt. Joni Money. Medics responded to the call and pronounced the victim dead on the scene. He was later identified as Cameron Terrell Smith, 35, of Brighton.
Another shooting victim showed up at UAB Hospital for treatment and said she had been shot in the Brighton area. Her injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.
Money said the two shootings are related although it is unclear where the female was shot.
While on the scene of the shooting, witnesses told investigators they saw a white car fleeing the scene after they heard gunshots.
