UPDATE: Arrest made in shooting near Western Hills Mall

FAIRFIELD — The Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a shooting that happened around 1:20 a.m. on Monday, May 31, 2021.
Sgt. Joni Money said a deputy was patrolling the area near Western Hills Mall when he heard multiple gunshots. The deputy then saw a vehicle leave the roadway, strike a tree and come to a rest near the 7200 block of Aaron Aronov Drive.
When the deputy got to the vehicle, he found that two people inside the vehicle had been shot. A 35-year-old woman and a 26-year old man were transported by ambulance to UAB Hospital. The man had life threatening injuries and the woman’s injuries were not believed to be life threatening.
There are no suspects in custody at this time.
