CALERA — According to Calera police, just after 3 a.m. on Saturday, a patrol unit attempted to stop a vehicle for tailgating another car and crossing the center line. The vehicle fled at a high rate of speed south into Chilton County then back north into Shelby County.
“During the pursuit, multiple items were thrown from the vehicle including firearms,” according to a statement from CPD. “One of the vehicles occupants was shot – either by himself or another occupant – apparently while firearms were being discarded. The suspects are from Birmingham and have histories of arrest for acts of violence including murder and armed robbery.”
A Calera officer applied a tourniquet to the leg of the suspect with the gunshot wound and he was transported by ambulance to the hospital.
Police said a criminal investigation is underway and ATF is assisting with the firearm aspects and evidence recovery.
