JEFFERSON COUNTY — A man was shot and killed on Sunday, September 12, when he raised a gun over a broken necklace earlier in the evening.
According to Jefferson County Sheriff’s office, around 2:15 a.m., deputies responded to a call at the 200 block of 18th Avenue on reports of shots being fired.
Maurice Carter, 31, raised a handgun at one of the people at the location. That person backed away from Carter with his hands up, retrieved a shotgun, and fired once striking Carter.
Deputies found Carter on the side of the building, where he reportedly fled after being shot.
Deputies took measures to save Carter’s life until medical personnel arrived on scene. Carter was transported to UAB hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
According to Jefferson County Sheriff’s office, after presenting the case to the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office, it was determined that the shooting of Maurice Carter was in self-defense and that there would be no charges pursued.
