BIRMINGHAM — Updated: BPD reported at 10:40 p.m. on Wednesday that the standoff in the 500 Block of Brussels Circle had ended.
“Unfortunately, we report the subject was discovered unresponsive suffering from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound,” police said in a statement. “Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel pronounced the subject deceased on the scene.”
Reported earlier: Police in Birmingham are in a stand-off with a suspect that officers believe shot a woman earlier. The suspect then fired on police officers and barricaded himself in a nearby apartment.
The statement went on to say that the suspect fled into an apartment in the 500 block of Brussels Circle.
“The suspect then fired shots at officers,” according to the statement. “No officer returned fire or was injured. BPD has initiated a tactical call out where we hope to resolve this issue peacefully.”
Police have closed the surrounding streets and are asking the public to avoid the area.
