TRUSSVILLE — It took them all seven games to do it, but the Hewitt-Trussville boys’ bowling team beat a talented Spain Park squad here, 4-3 on Wednesday, November 10, 2021 to open the season.
“We struck when we needed to, and we really had to go and hit some decent shots to win,” head coach Tommy Abney said.
The Huskies dropped the first game, 159-164, and then won the second game 181-161. They dropped the third game, 142-167, and then took game four, 174-157. Hewitt-Trussville then made it two in a row by winning the fifth game 163-148, putting Spain Park on the brink of losing in six. However, the Jaguars rebounded to take a close sixth game, 155-151, and then Hewitt-Trussville closed it out by eight points in the final game, 148-140.
“The lane conditions were difficult,” Abney said. “But the guys have to learn to adjust to those lane conditions. They did that, and I’m proud of how they were able to maintain their composure and win.”
The Huskies are a young team, featuring three freshmen, a junior and two seniors who alternate in. Abney said that while it was good to get the first win of the season under their belts, the team would come away with lessons to work on.
“This was our first match, and I think we learned a lot,” Abney said. “We had one bowler out, Hunter Kyle, who is still playing football. But once he can join the team, having him back in our lineup will help tremendously.”
The Hewitt girls’ team lost in four straight games to Spain Park.
The teams will travel to Gardendale to play on November 16 at 4 p.m., and will then return home for two contests: November 18 against Southside-Gadsden at 4 p.m. and then November 30 against Gardendale. Both of those home contests are hosted by Sparetime Trussville.
