BIRMINGHAM — A 29-year-old was shot and killed during a reported robbery on Tuesday, December 21, around 7:40 p.m.
According to the Birmingham Police Department (BPD), Jequaris Jerryll McCann, 29, of Birmingham, was fatally wounded when he was shot during a reported robbery at 2121 19th Street Ensley (Marathon Gas Station).
“Officers arrived on the scene and observed the victim lying unresponsive in the parking lot suffering from an apparent gunshot wound,” Officer Truman Fitzgerald said
Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel transported the victim to UAB Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries.
“The preliminary investigation suggests the victim was at the location when several suspects entered the victim’s vehicle while it was parked at the location and unoccupied,” Truman said. “The suspects were in the course of stealing the victim’s vehicle when shots were fired at the victim, fatally wounding him.”
Truman said that while officers were searching the surrounding area officers observed the victim’s vehicle near the Marathon and several males fleeing from the victim’s vehicle.
“Officers then searched the area for the suspects, and additional resources were deployed to the area to search for the suspects,” Truman said. “Currently, there is no one in custody.”
