BIRMINGHAM — A 20-year-old sustained life-threatening injures during an apparent assault on Saturday, January 1, at approximately 2:03 a.m.

“A Birmingham Police officer, who was working in an off-duty capacity near the area, observed a male lying in a parking lot suffering from an apparent gunshot,” Birmingham Police Officer Truman Fitzgerald said.
Cruz-Soto was transported to UAB Hospital by Birmingham Fire and Rescue, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
“The preliminary investigation suggests the shooting may have stemmed from a fight between several individuals,” Fitzgerald said.

This is Birmingham’s 1st murder investigation of 2022.
