BIRMINGHAM — Snow hit the metro Birmingham area overnight, blanketing much of the area.
Stormy winds brought rain from the western side of the state and a cold front followed with it, turning the rain to a wintry mix of sleet and snow before fully transforming into snowfall.
Some areas of northern Alabama, like Athens and Madison, reported up to as many as eight inches of snow accumulating in just a few hours.
In the Birmingham metro area, the snow was lighter, according to the National Weather Service, with areas like Homewood and Hoover seeing two to four inches but freezing temperatures have the potential to create road hazards. Motorists who must travel are encouraged to drive safely.
NWS Birmingham expects highs in the low- to mid-40s on Monday, Jan. 3, so plan accordingly.
